Home Modifications
Disabilities or medical conditions that restrict your day-to-day living can affect your ability to remain in your own home. In saying this simple home modifications can be the difference between staying at home and moving into aged care facilities.
Home Modifications aim to increase the freedom, safety, independence and practicality within the home. Home modifications allow you to live independently and safely within your home and can comprise of minor or major alterations.

Minor Modifications
May comprise of small, low-cost installations such as:
- Grab rails
- Hand held shower installation
- Lever Taps
- Non-slip spray application to bathroom flooring
- Step modifications and step ramps
- Shower curtain rods and screen removal
- Door wedges
- Light switch and power point relocation
- Night light installation
Major Modifications
May comprise of significant structural changes to a home such as:
- Installation of a lifts
- Complex structural bathroom alterations, such as bath removal
- Installation of complex ramps.

Equipment Prescription
An immense array of specialised equipment is available to assist people and their carer’s to increase safety and independence, including:
- Driving aids/equipment – Spinner knobs, left foot accelerators, panoramic mirrors, satellite controls.
- Mobility and Transfer Equipment –Four wheeled/ wheelie walkers, manual and electric wheelchairs, motorised scooters, hoists, transfer boards and slide sheets.
- Equipment for Daily Living – Adaptive cutlery, long handled washing and dressing aids, toileting and continence aids, hand held showers, adapted kitchen equipment.
- Seating and Positioning Equipment – Modified chairs and beds, bed raisers, shower chairs, pressure relieving mattresses and cushions, specialised seating systems and positioning equipment.
- Sensory Equipment – Magnifiers, dialogue clock, enlarged buttoned phones.
- Personal Alarms – Which can be used in an emergency when the telephone cant be reached.
Freedom Occupational Therapy specialises in equipment prescription to ensure the most appropriate aid/s and equipment is prescribed. In addition, appropriate installation and training in the use of the aids and equipment is provided, ultimately ensuring safe appropriate use.
